Arteda Civitate

An early medieval settlement in Spain (9th to 13th centuries CE) listed in contemporary Latin documents. This settlement is now identified with a second phase of occupation of an archaeological site known as El Forau de la Tuta near modern Arieda in Zaragosa province where a previously unknown Roman settlement has also been discovered. In addition to archaeological finds in situ, spolia from both the Roman and medieval phases have been identified in the more recent Ermita de San Pedro.

Benalroma

Roman villa at modern Benalmádena Costa on the Spanish Mediterranean coast, southwest of Malaga. The site is located on the north corner of the intersection of Avenida Antonio Machado and Avenida de las Palmeras. Most of the excavated portions of this large villa, which included a garden and water feature, are conserved or reburied under modern structures; however, a walled pit makes some portion of the extant remains visible to passerby.

Pietra Dell’Oglio (bridge)

A Roman bridge crossing the Aufidus (modern Ofanto) river at the border between the modern Italian provinces of Campania and Basilicata. The bridge is one of two candidate identifications for the "Pons Aufidi" shown on the Peutinger map (the Ponte S. Venere), a possibility bolstered by recent comparative archaeological studies of the two bridges. The Pietra Dell'Oglio remains in use today for the Strada Comunale Fs di Monteverde, which connects to the Strada Statale 401 dir dell'Alto Ofanto e del Vulture at the southeast end of the bridge.

Sanctuary of Demeter (Knossos)

The sanctuary sacred to Demeter is located on the Gypsadhes hill, just south of the Minoan 'palace' complex. On this hill, D.G. Hogarth excavated a series of Minoan houses beginning in 1900. Within this area, a first-millennium BCE sanctuary would develop. Excavation reports note the comingling of Minoan remains and Hellenistic deposits. The Classical sanctuary was suspected in 1927 on the basis of sporadic finds, but significant excavations did not begin until 1957.

Aynuna

In modern Saudi Arabia, about 3km inland from the modern fishing port of al‑Khuraybah on the Gulf of Aqaba, a pair of ancient Nabatean sites occupy high ground to the northwest of the Wadi Aynuna. Most scholars agree that these sites are to be identified collectively with Leuke Kome, mentioned in Strabo and the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea; however, some other locations have been posited (see Gawlikowski 2022, note 5).

Barbarathermen at Trier

Dating to the second century, the so-called "Barbara Baths" (Barbarathermen in German) are the largest Roman bath complex known north of the Alps. The bath complex was reused first as a Medieval castle and then as a seventeenth century Jesuit college. The ruins were designated as part of the "Roman Monuments, Cathedral of St. Peter and Church of Our Lady in Trier" UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986.

Chambritrasos

An ancient geographic feature mentioned in two Hellenistic treaties where it is described as a watercourse. Scholars argue that it is to be identified with the modern Khavgas/Havgas gorge, which runs intermittently to drain the Katharo Plateau in central-east Crete. The gorge empties naturally into the Lasithi plain where the modern Agios Georgios reservoir has been built to collect its runoff (close to the town of Agios Konstantinos).

Ctesiphon

An imperial capital of the Arsacid and Sassanid empire, this large ancient city originated at least as early as the third century BCE and declined in the eighth century of the modern era. It was located on the left bank of the Tigris river 35km south of what would later become modern Baghdad in Iraq. It was part of a complex network of settlements in the area, among which Seleucia (modern Vēh Ardašīr) also featured prominently. It was attacked, and sometimes occupied, by Roman forces multiple times.

Janiculum

This hill is located outside of the ancient city of Rome to the west of the Tiber and is not considered one of the Seven Hills of Rome. Kas(h)kar

Kas(h)kar was a significant Sasanian city, originally built on the west bank of the Tigris river in what is now modern Iraq's al-Kut district. A major flood in antiquity moved the channel of the Tigris, leaving Kashkar on the east bank. The city was supplanted by the new city of Wasit, built in the 8th century CE; Kashkar was subsequently abandoned. The original city is presumed to have lain somewhere in the vicinity of the modern residential area northeast of modern Wasit, across the heavily-controlled modern Tigris.

Korydela (island)

According to a fragment of Favorinus quoted by Stephanus of Byzantium, Korydela was one of two islets that constituted the "Chelidoniai petrai". These "rocks" are thought to be identifiable with the largest two of several islets that lie off modern Cape Gelidonya on the south coast of Anatolia (the modern Beş Adalar = Five Islands). Korydela is identified with the closed of the group to the cape, modern Meşe Adası.

La Brèche (necropolis)

Pons Aufidi

A Roman bridge (and possibly coincident road station) on the Via Appia over the Aufidus (modern Ofanto) river in Italy, listed on the Peutinger map and in the Antonine Itinerary. Traditionally it has been identified with a bridge known today as Ponte S. Venere, but recently archaeological work has cast doubt on this view and some scholars now favor an identification with the Ponte romano Pietra dell'Oglio, which lies about 15 miles further south and can be securely dated to the Roman period.

Ponte S. Venere

A much-repaired medieval bridge crossing the Aufidus (modern Ofanto) river. Long a traditional candidate location for the "Pons Aufidi" shown on the Peutinger map (thus BAtlas), recent survey work has found no evidence in the area consistent with a Roman-era bridge. The Pietra Dell'Oglio bridge (further south on the Ofanto) is of Roman date and now a more likely candidate. The Ponte S. Venere remains in use today for the Strada Statale 303.

An island placed by Ptolemy off the coast of the Greater Syrtis, along with Maia and Misynos. The name Pontia is used in the plural by Ps. Skylax to identify all three islands as a group. These islands are identified with modern scholars as prominent parts of the modern Legarah reef (Tre Scogli) off the Libyan coast.

Rienda Roman Villa

In the 1960s, agricultural activity unearthed evidence of a Roman-era villa at modern Rienda in Spain, which was then administratively associated with the municipality of La Artieda de Aragón (it is now part of the Sigüés municipality in Zaragosa province). Subsequent excavation revealed a large courtyard and other structures, as well as a number of mosaics.

The remains of a Roman bath house were discovered in a field to the west of the village of Little Chart, Kent in 1942. These remains included fragments of mosaic pavement. Excavations in 1942 and later in 1947 identified the site as a Roman bathing complex.

Sira (river)

The ancient Sira corresponds to the modern Oued El Hammam in Algeria, which originates above Hammam bou Hanifia (ancient Aquae Sirenses) and the modern reservoir there. At modern Mohammadia (ancient Castra Nova), the river leaves the mountains and becomes known as the Oued Habra. Its course north across the plain and associated wetlands to empty into the Mediterranean east of modern Mers El Hadjadj is surely much altered from antiquity.

Tomb of the Ottavii

The mid-third century CE tomb of the Ottavii was discovered beneath the Villino Cardani (now at Via della Stazione di Ottavia, 73) on 17 August 1921. Based on epigraphic evidence, the tomb was occupied by the remains of one Octavia Paolina, her father Octavius Felix, and two other relatives. The archaeological remains of a number of ancient villas are known in the area, mostly lying on property that later belonged to the Colonna family.

Tor Tignosa

Tor Tignosa, mapped and listed in the 17th century Catasto Alessandrino as a landed estate, is a ruined stone structure located some 8 km northeast of Lavinium. Multiple votive inscriptions were found in the vicinity, providing evidence for an ancient sanctuary dating to between the fifth and second centuries BCE.
