Colossus Neronis

The "Colossus Neronis" or "Colossal Statue of Nero" was a monumental bronze statue of the first-century CE emperor reportedly created by Zenodorus. The statue was originally an element of the sprawling Domus Aurea of Nero but the monument endured long after Nero's reign. The statue's original position likely marked the summit of the Velian Hill. The Flavians refashioned the statue to resemble Sol and Hadrian relocated the statue nearer the Flavian amphitheater as part of the work to create the Temple of Venus and Roma.

The Neo-Assyrian king Sennacherib built a residence for his son Aššur-ilī-muballissu in the city of Assur. That house was constructed near the city wall in the southeastern part of city (city plan quadrants l8/l9), near the bank of the Tigris River. This building, which is known from numerous inscribed stone blocks, is often referred to as the “(Crown) Prince's Palace” or “Prinzenpalast.”

Elephas herbarius (Elefantum herbarium), a place included in the Notitia, is mentioned only once and must lie at the southern limit of Regio VIII. Coarelli concludes that this place must have been located on the lower slopes of the Capitoline Hill facing the Forum Holitorium. Its coincidence with Late Antique and Medieval toponyms suggests that it refers to an ancient statue of an elephant, perhaps one shown eating plants, in the area of the Forum Holitorium.

Great Ziggurat of Aššur at Assur

From the first half of the second millennium BC until 614 BC, there was a ziggurat, a temple-tower, at Assur dedicated to the god Aššur (and his manifestation as the god Enlil). This sacred building, which went by the Sumerian name Earattakišarra (”House, Mountain/Noblest of the Universe”) in the first millennium BC and referred to as the “great ziggurat” in Middle Assyrian royal inscriptions, was likely founded by the Old Assyrian ruler Šamšī-Adad I (ca. 1808–1776 BC).

Numerous cuneiform tablets have been unearthed at Tell Abu Hatab since 1902.

Longthorpe II

A Pre-Roman Iron Age farmstead with a relatively short occupational history gave way to a Roman installation that was situated outside the confines of the first-century fort at Longthorpe near Peterborough. This installation was termed a "works-depot" by its excavators and shows evidence of both ceramic production and metalworking. The installation was likely established soon after the fort's own foundation in the late 40s. It is an unusual site for this period.

New Palace at Assur

The Middle Assyrian king Tukultī-Ninurta I (1233–1197 BC) built himself a new royal residence at Assur. That palace, which went by the Sumerian name Elugalumunkurkurra (“House of the King, Lord of the Lands”), covered an area of about 27000 m². After Tukultī-Ninurta I’s reign, the so-called “New Palace” was no longer maintained and, thus, fell into ruins.

New Year's Festival House at Assur

As part of his post-689-BC religious reforms, the Neo-Assyrian king Sennacherib (704–681 BC) had a new New Year’s festival house (akītu-house) constructed outside the western wall of Assur. This was an attempt to replicate the cultic topography of Babylon. The Sumerian ceremonial names of that holy building and its cella are Eabbaugga ("House Where Tiāmat Is Put To Death") and Edubdubabba ("House That Makes Tiāmat Tremble”) respectively.

Sarmaç is a modern settlement located on the northwestern slopes of Warak (Erek, Erk) Dağ about 10km to the east of Van in the Van Province in Eastern Turkey. In the monastery of Sarmaç (previously called Kohbants) three stone blocks with inscriptions of the Urartian king Minua (9th / 8th century BCE) were found which describe the construction of a susi temple for the god Ḫaldi, a fortress, a gate and the ‘barzudibiduni building of Minua’.

Sororium Tigillum describes a wooden beam that stretched across a branch of the Sacra Via that climbed the Oppian Hill near the Compitum Acilii. The monument was flanked by altars of Iuno Sororia and Iuno Curiatius. It is an ancient monument about which there are many stories, the primary one being a link to the Horatii and Curiatii and Publius Horatius' slaying of his own sister.

Temple of Anu and Adad at Assur

A distinctive feature of the city of Assur is the double-temple of the gods Anu and Adad. This building, together with its twin ziggurats, was constructed no later than the Middle Assyrian period; it underwent a major rebuilding in the reign of Tiglath-pileser I (1114–1076 BC). The existence of an (unnamed) Adad temple at Assur, however, is known from inscriptions of the Old Assyrian rulers Erišum I and Ikūnum. The various parts of this axisymmetric, double-temple was given Sumerian names: Anu’s temple and ziggurat were called Ešaan and Emelamanna; and Adad’s temple and ziggurat went by the names Ešuddegeštuku and Egišlamšaršar.

Temple of Aššur at Assur

From the second half of the third millennium BC until 614 BC, there was a temple in Assur dedicated to the city’s tutelary deity Aššur. The temple was excavated by W. Andrae in 1903–05 and 1909–12. The earliest and latest textual records for construction work on Aššur’s temple date respectively to the time of Šalim-aḫum, an early old Assyrian king, and the reign of Ashurbanipal (668–631 BC), Assyria’s last great king. According to the Middle Assyrian king Shalmaneser I (1263–1234 BC) and the Neo-Assyrian ruler Esarhaddon (680–669 BC), Ušpia, a tribal ancestor of the Old Assyrian king Šamšī-Adad I (ca. 1808–1776 BC), was the building’s founder. In 614 BC, when the city was captured by the Medes, the temple was destroyed.

Temple of Athena (Ilium)

The Temple of Athena at Ilion was a peripteral temple executed in the Doric order with a 12 x 6 columnar arrangement. Its creation is traditionally ascribed to Lysimachus (ca. 301-281 BCE), though it was later restored under Roman influence, likely during the principate of Augustus. Little of the temple, save its forecourt, remains in situ. It is mostly known from membra disiecta, including metopes uncovered during Schliemann's excavations.

The Temple of Athena in Miletos dates originally to the sixth century BCE, although the visible remains on site today belong to the Classical rebuilding of MIletos (ca. 479-450 BCE). The temple had a peripteral plan and was executed in the Ionic order. Unusually, its axis is oriented north-south.

Temple of Nabû of the ḫarû at Assur

Sîn-šarra-iškun (626–612 BC), Assyria’s penultimate king, built a new temple for the god Nabû of the ḫarû at Assur. The temple was constructed in vacant lot that was next to the temple of the Assyrian Ištar. That Neo-Assyrian king modelled the temple’s plan on that the Nabû temple at Kalhu (Nimrud) and named it after the Nabû temple at Babylon. Egidrukalamasumu (“House Which Bestows the Scepter of the Land”) was destroyed in 614 BC, when Assur was destroyed by the Medes.

A double-temple dedicated to the moon-god Sîn and the sun-god Šamaš existed at the city Assur from the Old Assyrian period onwards. The plan of this holy structure changed several times over the course of its long history, most notably in the Neo-Assyrian period, in the reign of Ashurbanipal II (883–859 BC). The Sîn temple was called Eḫulḫuldirdirra and the Šamaš temple went by the name Ebabbarra.

Altin Dilyar tepe

Altin Dilyar tepe is a place located in Afghanistan's Balkh Province. It lies to the north of Balkh, about 22 km south of the Oxus River (Amu Darya) and 16 kilometers north of Daulatabad, according to Ball (1982: 38). The ceramic evidence on the site belongs to the Achaemenid period, ca. sixth to fourth centuries BCE. Ball also notes that there is evidence for "a circular walled town covering approximately 15 hectares, dominated by a central citadel, 28 meters high." The site remains unexcavated.

Aššur, modern Qal'at Sherqat, is an Assyrian city on the western bank of the Tigris River. Named after its enigmatic tutelary deity, it was the original capital, ancestral home, and burial place of the Assyrian royal family. From the late third millennium B.C. until 614 B.C., when the city was captured and destroyed by the Medes, Aššur was Assyria's most important religious center. It was also Assyria's principal administrative center until the beginning of the ninth century, when Ashurnasirpal II (883-859) moved the capital to the newly constructed Calah.

Modern Hayling Island (borough of Havant, Hampshire, England) is the site of a multi-phase sanctuary: the Iron Age shrine dates ca. 50 BCE and the Roman temple dates ca. 55-60CE. Located on the north coast of Cyprus 10 km west of Keryneia, Lapethos/Lepethis Phoinikon is known through archaeological remains for the most part. Archaeological evidence shows settlement already in the Late Bronze Age, continuing to the first millennium BCE and beyond. ‘Locidae Regi’ is attested on the Peutinger Map, but there is little clarity as to whether it describes the name of a tribal group or of a region. Talbert indicates that Konrad Miller favored a reading that took the term as two words, i.e., "Locidae Regi" instead of as one word, i.e. "Locideregi". The evidence from the Peutinger Map does not offer the chance for a definitive determination.

Longthorpe

A Roman vexillation fortress of the first century A.D. was located at Longthorpe near Peterborough. The site was first identified via crop marks in 1961 and some excavations were carried out between 1967 and 1971. Nothing of the site is now visible as it has been consumed by a golf course. The fort had two phases: the first phase of 11 ha (27 acres) dates as early as A.D. 44-48 (definitely occupied by 61-62. A contracted phase of 4.5 ha (11 acres) followed later.

Old Palace at Assur

The Old Palace was the most important palace complex in the city of Assur. Although the oldest, securely-datable archaeological existence for the palace dates to the early Middle Assyrian period, this royal residence was probably founded in the Old Assyrian period, possibly during the reign of Šamšī-Adad I (ca. 1836–1776 BC). This important building was continuously until the sack and destruction of Assur in 614 BC. The Old Palace not only served as a residence for the Assyrian king and his family and an administrative center, but it was also a place of worship where the gods gathered on special occasions and the burial place of Assyrian kings.

Founded as a Greek city in the Propontis region of Anatolia, perhaps ca. 709 BCE, Persians would come to control Parium in 546 BCE. The city allied itself with Athens during the Peloponnesian War, but was subsequently ruled again by the Persians again. Its long occupation included a Macedonian phase, followed by control exercise by the Seleucids, the Kingdom of Pergamon, the Romans, and the Byzantines.

Teichos Dymaion

The site of Teichos Dymaion is located in Achaea and was continuously occupied in antiquity. Its megalithic fortifications date to the time of the Mycenaeans. In the first millennium BCE, the site's strategic value makes it a factor in third-century warfare. Temple of Ishtar at Assur

From the late Early Dynastic period (ED III, ca. 2500/2400 BC) until 614 BC, there was a temple in the city of Assur dedicated to Ištar, a goddess who was revered in that important northern-Mesopotamian city in a few different forms. Several building phases (designated “Temples H–A,” from earliest to latest) were excavated by W. Andrae between 1905 and 1914. Periodically the location and orientation of the Ištar temple changed, especially during the reigns of the Middle Assyrian kings Tukultī-Ninurta I (1243–1207 BC) and Aššur-rēša-iši I (1132–1115 BC). The earliest and latest textual records for the existence of the temple date respectively to the time of Ititi, a local ruler of Assur during the Old Akkadian Period, and the reign of Sîn-šarra-iškun (626–612 BC), the penultimate king of Assyria.

Thospia/Bouana/‘Ospa’/Ṭušpa

Ṭušpa is an Urartian fortress and settlement near the historic center of Van in southeastern Turkey. Here archaeological remains of buildings and inscribed objects of several Urartian kings starting with Sarduri I (ninth century BCE) have been found. Furthermore, the place is frequently mentioned in Urartian inscriptions in connection with the god Haldi, who is addressed as "Lord of Ṭušpa-City". Ṭupša is often referred to as the capital of Urartu, although this remains uncertain. Rather than an administrative center, it was probably a religious one. In later times the place was known as Thospia/Bouana/‘Ospa’ (BAtlas 89 F2 Thospia/Bouana/‘Ospa’). Today the ruins of the fortress are referred to as Van Kalesi (or Van Castle).

Timpone del Ponto

The archaeological site of Timpone del Ponto in Lucania indicates occupation from the Bronze Age through to the the Hellenistic period. The built fortifications of the Hellenistic period command a narrow point of the Sinni river valley between the hills of Coppola and Colobraro.

Vouni is located on the northwest coast of Cyprus, some 7 km west of Soloi. The rocky hill was occupied in antiquity and the settlement included a fortified palace enclosure, the ancient name of which is unknown.
