Columbarium in via Luigi Tosti

Excavations in 2022 revealed the remains of a Roman tomb of small dimensions, likely of the columbarium type. The tomb included fragments of a sarcophagus in white marble and an inscribed funerary altar of the second century CE. The altar commemorates the life of one Valeria Laeta, daughter of Publius, who lived 13 years and 7 months. The absence of traditional pre-Christian epigraphic formulae led ministry archaeologists to speculate that the tomb is of a Christian nature.

Davti-blur

Davti-blur is the Armenian name of an Urartian settlement situated on a natural hill near the modern village Nor-Armavir. Just like the settlement on the immediately adjacent hill Armavir which in Urartian was called Argištihinili ("city of Argišti") it was founded by Argišti I, son of Minua (8th century BCE). In Davti-Blur, a column base with an inscription of Argišti I was found which reports the construction of a building. Furthermore, several inscriptions on clay pithoi by Argišti have been found there which attest to the administrative activity at this place. A stone block of the Urartian king Sarduri II, son of Argišti I (8th century BCE) reveals that the place was further developed and extended by Sarduri II.

Harpham Roman Villa and Settlement

An extensive Roman courtyard complex and associated crossroads settlement in East Yorkshire, lying to the immediate north of the modern Harpham Grange and northwest of Burton Agnes. A small portion of the mostly invisible site was excavated in the early 20th century, with a second (never published) excavation following in the 1950s. A 2019 geophysical survey and its publication (Maw 2021) have made the site more sensible and better documented.

Melanippeia (island)

According to a fragment of Favorinus quoted by Stephanus of Byzantium, Melanippeia was one of two islets that constituted the "Chelidoniai petrai". These "rocks" are thought to be identifiable with the largest two of several islets that lie off modern Cape Gelidonya on the south coast of Anatolia (the modern Beş Adalar = Five Islands). Melanippeia is perhaps to be identified with the largest of the group, modern Devecitaşı Ada.

Monte Barro

Archaeological fieldwork conducted on Monte Barro between 1986 and 1997 produced important data related to the early Middle Ages in northern Italy. A settlement with a military nature develops from the fifth century CE onward. Of particular interest is a structure dubbed "Grande edificio", interpreted as the likely residence of a public official.

Monte Savello (Rome)

Monte Savello is an area located in Rome's Sant'Angelo district, between the pons Fabricius and the Capitoline Hill. Its status as 'monte' is owed to the fact that an artificial mound of debris accumulated in the area of the Circus Flaminius and the Theater of Marcellus, a mound that came to serve as a de facto quarry for spoliated building materials. "Savello" refers to the post-eleventh century incorporation of the area within the fortifications of the Savello family. Modern excavations have revealed Roman, post-Roman, Medieval, and more recent settlement horizons.

Nineveh/Ninos

This important Mesopotamian city flanks the eastern edge of the Tigris flood plain, opposite modern Mosul, of which it is now a suburb. From the third millennium B.C. onwards, Nineveh was the most important religious center of the goddess Ištar in the area that would become the Assyrian heartland. Starting in the Middle Assyrian period, the city came under the authority of the kings of Assyria, who often sponsored large-scale building activities there. However, it was not until 704 B.C. that Nineveh became the administrative capital of Assyria, when the Neo-Assyrian king Sennacherib moved the royal family and court there and transformed the city into a thriving imperial metropolis. Nineveh remained Assyria’s capital until 612 B.C., when it was captured and destroyed by a Babylonian-Median collation led by Nabopolassar and Cyaxares. The visible remains of the (7th-century) Assyrian city include the citadel mound Kuyunjik, the smaller mound of Nebi Yunus, and the twelve-kilometer-long city wall.

Parentium

Ancient Parentium, now Poreč, Croatia, was a city on the western coast of the Istrian peninsula. There is archaeological evidence of Illyrian settlement from the Bronze Age onward. The site factors in Roman campaigns of the second century BC. The settlement became an oppidum civium Romanorum and then was advanced to municipium by Augustus. Tiberius dubbed it Colonia Iulia Parentium in the first century AD.

Praetorian Guard Barracks at Amba Aradam Metro Station

Excavations for Rome's Metro C public transit line at the Amba Aradam Station revealed the remains of a second century A.D. barracks connected with the Praetorian Guard, along with a domus identified as that of a praetorian commandant. Although ruinous, the architectural complex demonstrates good preservation of some features, notably floor mosaics and wall paintings. The second century A.D. stratigraphic horizon was reached at a depth of approximately 12 meters.

Sanctuary of Demeter (Knossos)

The sanctuary sacred to Demeter is located on the Gypsadhes hill, just south of the Minoan 'palace' complex. On this hill, D.G. Hogarth excavated a series of Minoan houses beginning in 1900. Within this area, a first-millennium BCE sanctuary would develop. Excavation reports note the comingling of Minoan remains and Hellenistic deposits. The Classical sanctuary was suspected in 1927 on the basis of sporadic finds, but significant excavations did not begin until 1957.

Tanitike Limne

During the period of Greek and Roman engagement with Egypt, the Tanitike Limne (one of the Nile Delta's many lake/lagoons) was bounded by the Phatnitikon (modern Damietta branch) and Mendesion (now disappeared) mouths of the Nile. The lake's ancient extent corresponds roughly to the western half of the modern Lake Menzala.

Temple of Ishtar at Assur

From the late Early Dynastic period (ED III, ca. 2500/2400 BC) until 614 BC, there was a temple in the city of Assur dedicated to Ištar, a goddess who was revered in that important northern-Mesopotamian city in a few different forms. Several building phases (designated “Temples H–A,” from earliest to latest) were excavated by W. Andrae between 1905 and 1914. Periodically the location and orientation of the Ištar temple changed, especially during the reigns of the Middle Assyrian kings Tukultī-Ninurta I (1243–1207 BC) and Aššur-rēša-iši I (1132–1115 BC). The earliest and latest textual records for the existence of the temple date respectively to the time of Ititi, a local ruler of Assur during the Old Akkadian Period, and the reign of Sîn-šarra-iškun (626–612 BC), the penultimate king of Assyria.

Vatrenus (river)

This ancient river, identified with the modern Santerno, is one of many draining the northern slopes of the Appenines into the Po valley. Today, the Santerno eventually empties into the modern Reno, but in antiquity it flowed, possibly in multiple branches, further into the complex and now much-changed Padus (Po) delta.

Villa Commedia

A villa on Lake Como described by Pliny the Younger. Scholars have long thought it must be located in the vicinity of modern Lierna, and 19th and 20th century finds of floor mosaics and other elements have led to conjectures that the villa must have been located either in the peninsular "Castello" neighborhood or in the core of the old town, which has long been known as "Villa" because of this conjecture. A mosaic from the latter area is now conserved in the Archaeological Museum of Lecco.
