Pleiades: Sharing Geographic Information
The intersection of an active community of creators and users with the technical capabilities and content brought together in Pleiades creates an environment in which scholarly communication and the dissemination of new information happens much more rapidly. For this reason, we prefer the word “community” (borrowed from the open-source software and Web 2.0 world) over “audience” or “user base.”
Pleiades embraces, from its conception, the idea that fundamental patterns of information exchange are evolving rapidly and that we would be short-sighted to produce a resource designed solely for passive consumption. Rather, we are bringing together people, information and web systems in a dynamic way such that our "users" (the members of our community) can not only consume, but also produce new knowledge and share it dynamically with others.
