Castel Malnome (Ponte Galeria)

An imperial necropolis with at least 326 tombs was identified at modern Castel Malnome (Ponte Galeria) in Italy. Archaeological evidence marks these as burials belonging to working-class people of the Roman imperial period, with most graves having either no grave goods or very few. The osteoarchaeological analysis led excavators to speculate that the individuals buried here many have worked in the salt flats.

Blanda

Blanda was an ancient city of Lucania, although Pliny the Elder and Ptolemy differ as to its placement; the former places it near the coast, the latter inland. Modern scholars are in agreement that Ptolemy was incorrect. It is to be identified with the significant archaeological site at Palecastro di Tortora in modern Italy.

Bulla Regia

A center for Numidian royalty, Bulla Regia first became an oppidum liberum in the reign of Augustus and then a colony under Hadrian. The site, which boasts significant archaeological remains, lies in modern Tunisia, about 5km north of the modern city of Jendouba. The site was reportedly known in the 19th century as Hammam-Darradji. Today, a small modern settlement named Aïn Babouch abuts the site (not to be confused with Babouch, which lies further north along the border with Algeria).

Meydancıkkale/Kiršu

An ancient fortified complex located on a natural outcropping of the Taurus mountains near the modern village of Tırnak in the Gülnar district of Turkey's Mersin Province. Identified as KRS (Kirsi/Kirshu) in neo-Babylonian chronicles, the site continued to be occupied and used into the Hellenistic period when it was destroyed and abandoned around 235 BCE. There is some evidence for reuse of the site in the Byzantine period.

A stratovolcano located in the Gulf of Naples, Vesuvius stands to an elevation of 1,281 m (4,203 ft). It is notable in historical terms for its eruption of AD 79 in which numerous settlements, including Pompeii and Herculaneum, were destroyed.
